He is the son of Raj Pandita of Maharaja of Darabhanga. His parents were a priest. His father’s name was Pandit Sri Lalvamshijha and his mother’s name was Smt. Gita Devi.
His father was a high-ranking scholar of Sanskrit in the Mithila tradition and was a court vidwan of the then king of Mithila (Darbhanga Kingdom). His name was in childhood “Nilambar”. This name was given by his elder brother Pandit Sridev Jha.
