Neelam Sirohi Wiki, Age, Height, Net Worth 2026

Neelam Sirohi is an Indian freestyle wrestler who won a silver medal in the women’s 50kg category at the Senior World Wrestling Championships in Astana in October 2026, losing the final to Japan’s Yui Susaki. Her run to the final was a breakthrough after years of steady progress without a senior world medal, and it made her only the second Indian woman ever to reach a World Championships final, after Anshu Malik, according to PTI. She comes from a wrestling family in a village near Mathura in Uttar Pradesh, far from Haryana, the state that has produced most of India’s leading women wrestlers. Her path to the podium took considerably longer than those of other Indian athletes who reached the world stage, including Antim Panghal in wrestling and Preeti Pal in para athletics.

Early Life

Neelam Sirohi comes from Phenchari, a village near Mathura in western Uttar Pradesh, where the local wrestling tradition had weakened over the years, as reported by myKhel. Her family had deep links to the sport: her grandfather was a wrestler who served in the Indian Army, her uncles and her sister were also involved in wrestling, and her maternal uncle, Janardhan Pehelwan, was a former wrestler and national champion, according to PTI and myKhel. Her father is Kunwar Pal Singh Sirohi, who worked in the telecommunications business, as reported by The Times of India. Neelam told The Times of India in 2022 that she had been inspired by her maternal uncle and had started wrestling at the age of 15.

As a young girl, Neelam watched her maternal uncle practise traditional mud wrestling and began entering small local dangal competitions, her father told myKhel. Janardhan Pehelwan began training Neelam and her brothers at home after moving to Mathura. The family moved to Delhi, where her father brought her in 2012 to look for regular training. A visit to Chhatrasal Stadium found that only boys and men were being trained there at the time, so the search continued until training for women was found at Pochanpur in Dwarka, where her father bought her a bicycle so she could travel to practice on her own, as her father recalled to myKhel. She trained there for five months, and she later moved to the Inspire Institute of Sport in Bellary, Karnataka, in 2018, according to The Times of India.

Career

Neelam progressed through state and national competitions and began representing India internationally as a teenager, competing at the Under-17 World Championships in Athens in 2017, as reported by myKhel. The Times of India reported that she won a silver medal at the Under-23 Asian Championships in 2022, the year she was selected for the World Championships in Belgrade, Serbia, after winning a re-run selection trial against Ankush following a technical issue in the first trial. MyKhel reported that she won gold at the Under-23 Asian Championships in 2023. Before her 2026 breakthrough, she had competed at two senior World Championships without progressing deep into the competition and had never represented India at the Asian Games, as reported by Sportstar.

At the Zagreb Open in early 2026, Neelam won silver in the women’s 50kg category, beating Poland’s Agata Walerzak 10-0 and Azerbaijan’s Elnura Mammadova 12-2 before losing the final 5-2 to Japan’s Haruna Morikawa, according to UNI reporting based on Olympics.com. She trains at Najafgarh Stadium in Delhi under Virender Dahiya, the head coach of India’s women’s wrestling team, and Parvesh Rathi, as PTI reported. Rathi told PTI that work on adding variations to her attacks had paid off.

At the 2026 World Championships in Astana, Neelam opened with a 6-0 win over Belarus’s Natallia Varakina, a former Youth Olympic champion, and advanced to the semi-finals after Russia’s Elizaveta Smirnova withdrew from their quarter-final because of injury, as PTI reported. In the semi-final she beat Kazakhstan’s Zeinep Bayanova, an Asian Games bronze medallist, 7-3, using a four-point roll to take control. The win guaranteed her a silver medal and made her only the second Indian woman to reach a senior World Championships final, after Anshu Malik in 2021. Together with Kajal Dhochak’s progress in the 76kg category, it marked the first time two Indian women had reached World Championships finals at the same edition.

In the 50kg final, Neelam faced Japan’s Yui Susaki, a Tokyo Olympics gold medallist and four-time world champion entering the bout. Susaki led 5-0 and pinned Neelam just before the end of the first period to win her fifth world title, without conceding a point in the whole tournament, as PTI reported. Neelam’s father told myKhel that she had suffered a minor injury during the final, and that the family’s next target was an Olympic medal. Neelam herself had once told him not to come to the airport to receive her until she returned with a World Championships medal, a promise the silver medal in Astana fulfilled.
