Political Career
Nitin Gadkari was curious about politics since childhood. He had joined the Akhil Bhartiya Vidhyarthi Parishad (ABVP) in 1976. He had actively participated within the college student elections which resulted in ABVP winning all the seats of the Nagpur college student body.

In 1981, he had organised the 28th National convention of ABVP, where he was selected because the President of the Nagpur Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM). He got elected to the Maharashtra legislature from the Graduates Constituency in 1990. He was appointed because the Public Works Department (PWD) Minister in 1995 within the Maharashtra government. He held his position because the MLC for 4 consecutive terms from (1990 – 2008). He became the Leader of Opposition within the Maharashtra legislature in 1996.

He has served because the President of the Maharashtra state unit of BJP in 2004. In December 2009, Nitin Gadkari was made the BJP National President. He held this position till January 2013; when Rajnath singh was served because the National President of BJP. He contested in 2014 Lok Sabha election from the Nagpur Constituency and won. He was selected by the Union Government appointed him because the Chairman of National Rural Road Development Committee. Gadkari became the Minister of Road Transport and Highways and Minister of Shipping in May 2014.
Gadkari was given the extra charge of the Ministry of Shipping and Water Resources, and River Development and therefore the Ganga Rejuvenation Ministry in September 2017 after the death of Union Minister Gopinath Munde. In 2019, he contested the overall Elections again from the Nagpur Lok Sabha Constituency and won. He defeated his opponent Congress Nana Patole with a margin of over 2 Lakh votes. On 31 May 2019, he was appointed because the Union Minister for Road Transport, Highways & Shipping and therefore the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises.

Controversies
- In November 2011, the body of a lass was found inside Gadkari’s car. When investigated, it had been revealed that it had been the daughter of his house cleaner. The girl’s family claimed that she was assaulted and murdered; as there have been 19 injury marks on her body. The doctors said she died due to suffocation as she couldn’t get out of the car and therefore the marks on her body weren’t of assault. The girl’s family accused Gadkari of using his position to influence doctors and therefore the police as no action was taken against Gadkari.
- In 2012, Gadkari was accused of cash laundering and forgery by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). it had been revealed that his company Purti Group had given loans to many companies who had invested during this company. Further investigations indicated concealment .

- In 2014, Gadkari announced an end of the ban of e-rickshaws as conveyance . The media acknowledged that his company, Purti Group, was involved within the manufacturing of e-rickshaws; the choice to finish the ban would benefit him directly. Later he clarified that none of his companies is involved within the manufacturing of e-rickshaws.
- In 2014, before the Assembly elections of Maharashtra, a show cause notice was issued to him by the committee . The notice asked him to clarify his remarks given during a rally asking voters to simply accept bribes given by other parties to lure them on the other hand vote for the party they need to.

- In August 2019 Gadkari created controversy when he stated that he had advised the Union minister of finance to “throw out” the RBI Governor because the latter was inflexible and adamant.
- In March 2021, the Swedish firm Scania AB admitted that they need delivered a bus to a firm with links to Gadkari and therefore the vehicle was intended for his daughter’s wedding. Gadkari’s office have dismissed the allegations of bribery, citing it to be an “internal affair of the Swedish firm”.
