Ghulam Nabi Azad was born into a Kashmiri family. His father Rahamatullah Batt and mother Basa Begum. In 1980, he was married to wife Shameem Dev Azad, Kashmiri singer of Jammu & Kashmir.

Ghulam Nabi Azad started his career as working secretary for the Block Congress Committee in Bhalessa in 1973. In 1975, he was nominated as the President of Jammu and Kashmir Youth Congress. In 1980, he was appointed as the President of All Indian Youth Congress.
Thereafter in 1980, Ghulam Nabi Azad was elected to 7th Lok Sabha from Maharashtra’s Washim constituency. In 1982, he was appointed as the Central government Deputy Minister in charge of Law, Justice and Company Affairs Ministry. In 1984, he was elected to 8th Lok Sabha and member of Rajya Sabha Maharashtra from 1990 – 1996.
In Rao’s government, he took charge of Parliamentary Affairs and Civil Aviation ministries. In 1996, he was elected to Rajya Sabha from J&K for 6 years. In 1996, he was sworn as the Health Minister of India in the UPA government of Dr. Manmohan Singh.
He was worked and expand National Rural Health Mission which was helped half of million health workers in all India, also he was suggested late marriage for population control and said that lack of electricity absence of TV in rural areas will cause to produce more children.
On 2 November 2005, he became the Chief Minister of Jammu & Kashmir.
On 7th July 2008, he was resigned as Chief Minister of Jammu & Kashmir because of People’s Democratic Party withdrew support for his government. In 2014, he was appointed as leader of opposition National Democratic Alliance. In 2015, he was re-elected to Rajya Sabha from Jammu & Kashmir.
He retires as a leader of opposition from Rajya Sabha in February 2021.
