Thereafter, he was working as a lecturer in the department of Political Science. He was selected for the IAS in the mid of 1988 and he left the lecturer job in the University.

In Service of IAS he got training in Assam Administrative Staff College for 3 weeks in Guwahati (1995-1996) and also got training in Indian Institute of Management for 1 week in Bangalore (1999-2000). He also got foreign training in Public Administration in Australia for Master of Public Policy and Transport in USA for Structuring Tarriff.

In 2006, AK Sharma completed his Master of Public Policy Course with merit from Australian National University, Canberra with high distinctions in all the papers.

Thereafter, he was District Magistrate in three districts of Gujarat (Mehsana, Kheda, & Anand). At the state level he was two postings first is Deputy Secretary Finance Department and second is In-charge of the Bureau of Public Enterprises during the period of 1998-1999.

After 8th October 2001, Arvind Kumar Sharma IAS was appointed as Secretary to the CM of Gujarat, he was the junior most among three IAS secretaries. Thereafter he managed departments of Industry, Mining, Revenue, Forests, Education, Tourism, Road & Building, and Infrastructure etc.

During the period of 2001 – 2014 in CM office of Gujarat, he held many industrial and infrastructure development assignments like MD of iNDEXTb and CEO of GIDB. In 2014, he was posted in PM office as Joint Secretary and In 2017, he was the additional secretary in PM office.

In 2020, Arvind Kumar Sharma IAS was appointed as the Secretary of Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises. In January 2021, he take VRS from his job.

And joined the BJP Party and AK Sharma is the member of BJP Party. At, present AK Sharma is the Vice President of UP BJP party.
