Trent Hidlay Wiki, Age, Net Worth 2026

Trent Hidlay is an American freestyle wrestler who won senior world silver at 92 kg at the 2026 World Wrestling Championships in Astana, Kazakhstan, on 1 November 2026. He lost the final 3-2 to Amanula Gadzhimagomedov of Russia after a video review overturned a late 4-1 lead in the closing seconds, a year after he had beaten the same opponent 13-10 to win world gold in Zagreb. Like fellow American world medallists Kennedy Blades and Bo Bassett, Hidlay built his senior success on a long NC State college career before breaking through at world level. His Astana silver was his second straight senior world medal.

Early Life

Trent Niemond Hidlay was born on 7 April 1999 in Lewistown, Pennsylvania, according to his biographical record, although his USA Wrestling profile lists the year as 1997, a discrepancy that is flagged in the FAQ section below. He grew up in Mifflin County, Pennsylvania, in a sporting family, and his parents are Mark and Nikki Hidlay, according to WIN Magazine. His older brother Hayden also wrestled at NC State and became a multiple-time All-American there, while his eldest brother Heath played college football and his younger sister Lydia played college field hockey.

Hidlay wrestled at Mifflin County High School in Lewistown, where he became a two-time Pennsylvania state champion and finished his school career with a record of 154 wins and 14 defeats. According to USA Wrestling, he won his final 81 high school matches without surrendering a takedown during that run, and he recorded 73 career pins, the second most wins in county history at the time. He chose NC State, where his brother Hayden was already on the team.

His family connection shaped his college choice, but it did not make his path easy, since he arrived at NC State as a younger brother trying to match an established All-American. He settled in Raleigh from the summer of 2018, drawn by the Wolfpack culture under head coach Pat Popolizio.

Career

Hidlay wrestled for NC State from 2018 to 2024 and finished as a four-time NCAA Division I All-American, a four-time ACC champion and a two-time NCAA finalist. He was named ACC Freshman of the Year in 2020. He competed mainly at 184 pounds in college, and his battles with Penn State star Aaron Brooks in NCAA competition became a defining feature of his folkstyle career.

Alongside college wrestling, Hidlay collected age-group world medals in freestyle, winning bronze at the 2019 under 20 World Championships at 86 kg and silver at the 2022 under 23 World Championships at 86 kg in Pontevedra, Spain. He won the 2023 Bill Farrell Memorial in New York, beating Alex Dieringer in the final. After his bid at 86 kg ended at the 2024 United States Olympic Trials, he moved up to the non-Olympic 92 kg class, where his senior career took off.

His breakthrough senior season came in 2025, when he won the United States Open title at 92 kg and swept Josh Barr 6-1 and 3-2 in the Final X series to earn his first senior world team place. He added Pan American gold in Monterrey, Mexico, and ranking series gold in Budapest, Hungary, before travelling to Zagreb, Croatia, for his senior world debut. In the final he trailed Gadzhimagomedov 10-2 before scoring 11 unanswered points, including a four-point move with 30 seconds left, to win 13-10 in one of the great freestyle comebacks, as reported by NBC Sports.

Hidlay defended his status in 2026 with Pan American gold in Coralville, Iowa, a silver medal at the Zagreb Open ranking series event and a Final X series win that secured his second senior world team place. At the 2026 World Championships in Astana, he pinned Jesaia Uera of Nauru in 45 seconds, beat Ali Tcokaev of Azerbaijan 5-1 and edged Amirhossein Firouzpourbandpei of Iran 11-8 in a dramatic semifinal. According to USA Wrestling, he led the final 4-1 with 18 seconds left before the review reversed the deciding sequence to two points for Gadzhimagomedov, leaving Hidlay with a 3-2 defeat and a silver medal as the United States won the men’s freestyle team title.

Personal Life

Hidlay keeps his private life largely out of public view, and no reliable source reports a spouse or partner for him as of November 2026. His parents and brothers regularly travelled to support him, including at his world title run in Zagreb. He still lives and trains in Raleigh, North Carolina, where he works with the Wolfpack Regional Training Center and Titan Mercury Wrestling Club under personal coach Jamill Kelly.

Beyond competition, Hidlay has remained closely tied to NC State, where his brother Hayden has joined the coaching staff, and he has trained alongside visiting international wrestlers in Raleigh during world championship preparations. As of November 2026, his next major target is understood to be continued senior competition at 92 kg, with the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic cycle shaping future weight decisions.
