He did his schooling in Nepal local School. After completed secondary education, he completed his graduation in Bachelor of Arts and and Law after he did his Master’s degree in Political Science from Tribhuvan University. He was conferred an Honorary doctorate degree by Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in India.

Political Career

He started his political career in the 1990s, he was first elected to House of Representatives from Dadeldhura district in 1991. He was apppointed as the Minister of Home Affairs in cabinet by Girija Prasad Koirala, former Prime Miniter of Nepal.

In 1995, he was first appointed as the Prime Minister of Nepal with coalition government with Rashtriya Prajatantra Party. In 2001, after the resignation of Girija Prasad Koirala he won the Parliamentary elections and was appointed second time Prime Minister.

In 2004, he was reappointed as the Prime Minister but soon he was removed from PM office on 1st February, 2005 by Nepal king. He was sentenced to jail for two years under the corruption charges and released on 13th February, 2006.

On 10th April 2008, he was nominated by Nepal Congress from two constituencies like Dadeldhura and Kanchanpur. He won from both the constituencies. Since 2008 to 2012, he was elected as the vice president of Socialist International which held in Athens, Greece.

In 2017, he agreement with coalition government and he was sworn as the fourth time Prime Minister on 7th June but he resigned on 15th February 2018, to give Prime Minister seat to KP Sharma Oli leader of the Communist Party of Nepal.

On 12th July 2021, he was also selected as the fifth time Prime Minister of Nepal appointed by the Supreme Court of Nepal under the article 76(5) of the Consitution of Nepal within 28 hours.

On 13th July 2021, he sworn as the fifth time Prime Minister of Nepal.
